The Planning Department conducts historic and cultural resource surveys to identify significant properties, but it does not pursue official designation of resources unless requested by the Board of Supervisors or the Historic Preservation Commission. The designation process may be initiated by the property owner, the Board of Supervisors, the Arts Commission, the Historic Preservation Commission, or the Planning Commission.
